Rhinophyma is a severe form of rosacea that can significantly distort the appearance of the nose. Although the cause of rhinophyma is unknown, this condition occurs most commonly in men over the age of 40.
Patients with rhinophyma often experience redness and a bulbous shape to the nose, as well as a thickening of the skin and increase in oil glands. Symptoms may be triggered by consuming alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine or excessive exposure to sunlight.
Surgery is often performed to correct rhinophyma and restore a normal appearance to the nose. This many be done with a laser, scalpel or through dermabrasion, depending on the severity of symptoms and the specifics of each patient’s individual condition. Your doctor may choose to combine surgery with antibiotics, topical creams or Accutane® in order to thoroughly treat this condition and reduce the risk of recurrence.
